The Erie St. Clair Clinic in Leamington, Ontario offered us a first-hand look at the epidemic of drug addiction. We got to witness how the health care professionals in Leamington use a wholistic approach to rehabilitation. Clarke and I talked with the clinic’s lead doctor for over two hours and we got to sit-in during the doctor’s sessions with clients. One of the most important things we learned was the importance of building a safe and caring community for those with addiction issues. We also saw how the church can play a vital role in helping former addicts find a sense of purpose and hope. It is important to learn how widespread the issue of opioid addiction is in Ontario as it claiming the lives of many people each day. Education about these issues can help remove the stigma of substance abuse and provide resources for those suffering from the terrible disease of addiction.
